Signs and Symptoms of Substance Abuse

Sudden or noticeable personality changes

Severe mood swings

Changing peer groups

Decreased interest in leisure-time activity

Irresponsible attitudes toward work or school

Depressed feeling most of the time

Dramatic changes in personal hygiene concern

Changes in eating or sleeping habits

Smell of alcohol or marijuana (sickly, sweet smell)

Sudden weight loss

Tendency toward increased dishonesty

Trouble with the law: DWI, possession, theft, etc.

Absenteeism, especially on Mondays

Frequent job losses or changes

"Turned off" attitude if drugs are discussed

Missing household money or objects

Deteriorating family relationships

Drug use paraphernalia, booze, or empty bottle found

Observations by other people of negative behavior by person in question

Obvious signs of physical intoxication
